Please note: ID Scan will be released during the week commencing 16 February 2026. Keep an eye out for the app update.
Age-restricted jobs (like alcohol and tobacco) require ID verification. To make this process faster, the Sherpa app includes an ID scan feature.
You'll be prompted to scan the recipient's ID when required, helping reduce manual entry and support compliance.
When is an ID check required?
Sherpa drivers must verify ID for certain jobs, including:
- Alcohol
- Tobacco
Prescription medication
In all states, ID checks are mandatory for alcohol jobs - regardless of the recipient's age or appearance.
How do I use the scan ID feature?
For eligible deliveries, you'll see the option to scan the recipient's ID during the proof of delivery process.
How it works:
- Tap 'Scan recipient's ID'
- Hold the ID steady within the frame
- The app will automatically capture the date of birth details and display the recipient's age
Confirm and continue with the proof of delivery process
What happens if the scan shows the recipient is underage?
If the scan identifies the recipient as under 18 years old, the delivery cannot be completed. You'll be guided to create a return job in the app.
I'm having trouble scanning. What should I do?
Try the following troubleshooting steps:
- Ensure you are in bright, even lighting
- Avoid glare or reflections on the ID
- Hold the phone steady
- Make sure the entire ID is visible within the frame
Do not take photos of customers' IDs. Doing so breaches Sherpa's policies and may also breach privacy laws. Taking a photo of the ID may result in a warning and repeated instances will lead to account deactivation. If scanning fails, use 'Type manually' to enter details instead (see below).
What if I'm unable to use the scanning feature?
If you're experiencing technical issues with scanning, select the 'Type manually' option at the bottom of the screen.
Please take extra care when entering details manually. When verifying ID:
- Confirm the name matches the name on the order
- Ensure the recipient is 18 years or older
- Check for signs of tampering or fraudulent identification
- For digital IDs, confirm the ID is legitimate and not a screenshot (ask the recipient to refresh the screen if needed)
